  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Kathy N. -- Good summary of pre-contact period in northern New England : Very well written and engaging book about the archaeology of northern New England for the pre-contact period. His focus is New Hampshire sites but most of his observations would apply to a good part of northern New England. His background is both cultural anthropology and archaeology and so he writes his narrative about the material found there and tries to fit it into a wider cultural context which he keeps grounded in the material culture that has been found and the oral history of the Abenakis who live here. There aren’t many books written about this area and so this is a great synthesis to have. The pre-contact period for this area has been written out of our school history books. Only now that I live in northern New England have I realized how heavily populated and rich culturally this area was during the pre-contact period. • 5.0 out of 5 stars from DM -- Excellent book : I'm happy to review this nice little important contribution to New Hampshire archaeology and indigenous heritage studies. Read to the end - this is not just an archaeology book. I should preface this by saying I do not know the author personally, though as an anthropologist who grew up in New Hampshire and was a former SCRAP volunteer myself, the book was wonderfully familiar.
